There’s nothing like the live sound of a Joyless Bodies rockin’ dance party

On 10 September, the Montreal-based band released a live album of their 2021 show in St-Constant, QC.
The St-Constant show happened to be their first live show since the COVID-19 pandemic forced all show venues to close indefinitely.
“The goal of this release is mainly to showcase a specific point in time,” the band says. “Additionally, I [William Richard, guitarist and lead vocalist] think we mostly sound better when we play together live than isolated overdubs in the studio. This record is made to show our audience that has not had the chance of seeing us yet to experience us live in a certain way!”
Joyless Bodies includes Sammy Chouzenoux on the drums, Simon Tremblay on the bass and William Richard on vocals and guitar. The latter is also the lyricist.

Recorded and live mixed by Benoit Deschamps of Audioshop in Sainte-Catherine, mastered by Thomas Fournier of Braindown, another Montreal-based band, Live in Saint-Constant includes much of their renowned songs — barring the singles “Somewhere (On this Sphere)” and “No Tomorrow” that were released in early 2022.
Familiar favourites such as “Enclosed,” “Neon Lights” and “Flora” from their 2020 EP Lost Gaze.
“When it has been a while that we perform these songs live, they start to feel like second nature, like they are part of us,” Richard says. “Playing these feel like any simple task burned into our muscle-memory like drawing or something But it’s great really. It just make us kinda have a de-realization moment. Whenever I play these songs, I get that feeling of ”Wait that’s our songs?!” In my head, I’m still the kid in my basement struggling to write my first song.”
But indeed, Joyless Bodies came a long way since those days in the basement. Not only have they constructed a prominent social media presence on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, where they share snippets of every day life as a band with a mix of comic relief and talent, they have also played numerous shows during the summer.
From Piranha Bar on Ste-Catherine St., Blue Dog Motel on Blvd. Saint-Laurent to Bar Hémisphère Gauche on Beaubien St., Joyless Bodies have been touring their hometown with fervour and putting on rocking shows with neon lights, neck-brace worth head bangs, and heaps of debauchery.
‘’This [album] will show an important part of us that many can’t hear since we never had the chance to tour outside of our hometown yet. Our live sound is us at our best!”
