On 30 November, Montreal’s rising pop star Mary Jeans released the “Fragile Heart” music video.

The single, which came out on 28 November, is the singer’s one-sided conversation with a previous toxic boss.

“I first wrote ‘Fragile Heart’’s lyrics at home while thinking about my ex boss and the way he treated me,” Mary Jeans says. “He was a misogynist and he was always trying to prove that he was the best at everything. But the truth is that this man was very insecure . He’s the perfect example of toxic masculinity.”

Mixed and put together in the studio with Housefly music, the musical aspect of the song came together by mixing Mary Jeans’ created melodies and Housefly’s beats.

“The song was recorded on the first night we jammed!” Mary Jeans says excitedly.

COVER ART: Audré Vini.

Part of “Fragile Heart” was also mixed by Thomas Justiniano, also known as A Golden Coast.

The track is reminiscent of old school hip hop, with Mary Jeans’ low vocals giving it the sensuality it aspires, and crowning it beautifully at the end with a saxophone solo.

However, that is not the version the audience is used to.

In the last couple of months, she has been closing her sets with “Fragile Heart” alongside her band; and this rendition, while maintaining her studio beats, also has a Rock twist.

“I honestly think I prefer the studio version,” she admits. “Maybe I would like to mix both versions together, to have a little bit of the rock vibe from the live version!”

Not only does the song invoke old school hip hop feels, the music video, directed by Anthony Coveney, also looks like a blast from the past. With simple, various shots of Mary Jeans in three different looks, alone in a white room, the grainy film with the zoomed in takes gives it a throwback vibe.

“I wanted something simple with 3 looks, something sensual and feminine, to like contrast the powerful message from the song, adressing toxic masculinity,” Mary Jeans explains. “So I met Anthony [Coveney,] and talked about the way I wanted to video to look visually. I wanted a vintage lighting and a lot camera movement. I think the result is pretty accurate! It was super fun to shoot! I was mostly with wonderful and talented women on set, they made me feel super confident!”
